Rubber-to-metal adhesives

Rubber-Metal Bonding

In combination with chlorinated or nitrile rubber, phenolic resins are used to bond rubber with metals. The formulations („primers“) can also contain fillers and pigments.

The adhesion primer is applied to the sandblasted, degreased metallic surface by brushing, spraying or dipping. After the primer has been aired (dried), the rubber mix is vulcanized onto it under pressure and at elevated temperatures to achieve the highest possible bonding strength. The phenolic resin cross-links during this process, producing a high level of adhesion. The reactivity of the phenolic must be matched to the vulcanization properties of the rubber.

  • Engine mounts
  • rubber springs
  • shock absorbers
  • track dampeners for tracking vehicles
  • sealing components
  • and linings in pump bodies pipes and fittings

may be mentioned as examples of applications. In such applications, rubber-metal bonds are exposed to extreme mechanical, chemical and thermal stresses.
