Bakelite History
Our founder, Leo Baekeland, invented the first thermosetting resin – considered the first synthetic plastic – back in 1907. Building on more than a century of success, we harness innovative chemistry to improve and protect everyday life and our planet.

Dr. Leo Hendrik Baekeland
Dr. Leo Hendrik Baekeland invented phenol-formaldehyde called Bakelite®, a hard moldable plastic made possible by a patented heat & pressure formula.

General Bakelite Company
By 1910 Baekeland expanded his successful German-based Bakelite Gesellschaft operation to form the General Bakelite Company in the US.

DuriteTM launched
DuriteTM launched, expanding Bakelite’s automotive applications.

Borden Chemical
Borden Chemical founded through the separation of the New York Condensed Milk Company(1)
