It All Started at the Kitchen Table
The moment didn’t happen in a meeting or during a planning session. It happened at the kitchen table—a place where conversations are simple, honest, and often unexpectedly insightful.
That’s where Letmathe’s Site Leader Laurence Barning heard a question from his son, Wayne—one that would lead to meaningful support for a women’s football team in their hometown of Papendrecht, Netherlands.
More Than a Football Club
Laurence has deep roots with the local football club. Most weekends, he’s at the pitch supporting players, lending a hand where needed, and staying connected to a community that has shaped much of his life. With Wayne also playing for the organization, the club is more than just a sports field—it’s a place where their family has built relationships, routines, and memories over the years.

A Challenge the Women’s Team Knew All Too Well
Earlier this year, the club’s women’s team once again found themselves without a sponsor—a recurring challenge that limited their ability to compete, train, and access the same opportunities as other teams. One evening, while discussing the situation at home, Wayne shared an idea that immediately stood out:
“Instead of asking if Bakelite could sponsor my team, wouldn’t it be great if Bakelite supported the women’s team?”
It was a simple question—but it highlighted a gap that deserved attention.
The idea aligned naturally with Bakelite’s commitment to inclusion and equal opportunity. Moving forward with the sponsorship didn’t just address a financial need; it helped level the playing field. The women’s team gained visibility within the club, recognition both on and off the field, and renewed confidence—something they shared openly with Laurence and his family.
When Impact Becomes Personal

For Laurence, the moment resonated on a deeply personal level. Watching Bakelite support an idea sparked by his own son, and rooted in the community that shaped him, served as a reminder that meaningful change often begins quietly—long before it becomes a formal initiative.
What began as a simple question at home became an opportunity to put values into action. It’s a reminder that real impact isn’t always driven by large programs or long planning cycles—sometimes it starts with the courage to ask, “Why not?” And when people are willing to listen, change follows.
