Energy Intensity
At Bakelite, we are dedicated to developing environmentally responsible technologies and understand the importance of reducing our environmental impact. Our commitment to sustainability is deeply integrated into our business strategy, operations, and risk management.
Bakelite is committed to achieving a 10% reduction in energy intensity by 2030.
To achieve our 2030 sustainability goals several initiatives were implemented to harness renewable energy and reduce our overall energy consumption. These initiatives include conducting site-level energy assessments, sharing best practices, and sourcing low-carbon energy. We also track our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through comprehensive annual GHG inventories.
Bakelite’s ENERGY STAR Partnership
As a proud partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR program (Press Release), Bakelite has pledged to monitor energy performance and implement energy management strategies based on ENERGY STAR guidelines. This partnership underscores our commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability.
In 2024, Bakelite participated in the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Challenge piloting the ENERGY STAR program at our site in Conway, North Carolina. Site leaders and project leads are focused on reducing energy consumption by 10% in the next 5 years through innovative and valuable partnerships.
Solar Initiatives
In 2024, Bakelite Synthetics launched several solar initiatives to further reduce our carbon footprint across three sites. Installation of solar photovoltaic systems at
- Barry, United Kingdom is on track to reduce GHG emissions by 160 tons of CO2e
- Lantaron, Spain is on track to reduce GHG emissions by 80 tons of CO2e annually.
- In Kitee, Finland importing of photovoltaic electricity is on track to reduce GHG emissions by 100 tons of CO2e annually. These efforts are expected to reduce GHG emissions by 20-22% per site.
Innovative Energy Solutions

In Botlek, the Netherlands, a new steam turbine was installed to generate electricity from excess steam. This innovative solution covers up to 65% of the plant’s energy needs and is on pace to reduce emissions by 3,600 tons of CO2e annually.
Our 2030 Goal
Bakelite is committed to achieving a 10% reduction in energy intensity by 2030. By integrating sustainability goals into every aspect of our operations and continuously seeking innovative solutions, we are poised to create a more sustainable future.
At Bakelite Synthetics, sustainability is not just a goal; it’s a core value that drives our actions and decisions every day. We are proud of our progress and remain dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment. Read more about sustainability goals in our Sustainability Report.
