Bakelite Sustainability: Reducing Disposal Intensity by 10%

A promotional image for Earth Month at Bakelite, featuring a worker in a hard hat and blue uniform inspecting waste materials. The background shows stacked wooden pallets and a blue wall. The text reads 'WASTE INTENSITY' with an icon of a recycling symbol around a box.Bakelite develops environmentally responsible technologies and understands the importance of reducing our environmental impact. We integrate our commitment to sustainability deeply into our business strategy, operations, and risk management.

Bakelite is committed to achieving a 10% reduction in disposal intensity by 2030

To achieve our goal, we are increasing the collection of industrial solids such as metal, cardboard, and plastic. Simultaneously we are considering waste at the molecular level to create new opportunities from byproducts in our production processes.

Key Waste Management Initiative
  • Monomer Recovery: Across several of our U.S. sites and in Germany, we use advanced recovery methods to maximize the reuse of unreacted raw materials. Efforts have helped recover up to 99.5% of unreacted starting materials in production.
  • Waste Reduction: Bakelite’s Concepcion, Chile site has achieved a 70% reduction in final waste disposal since 2019. The site has increased its reuse rate by targeting the reduction of a specific byproduct of our manufacturing process.
  • Dedicated Line: In 2024, Bakelite’s Longueuil Quebec, Canada site completed a project to reduce waste generated from line flushes between PF and UF resin. The project consists of dedicating the following to UF resin service: a tank, piping, filtration, and UF loading arm. By eliminating waste generated through flushes, the site reduces waste generation by 25 metric tons per year.
  • Ceramic Rings: Bakelite’s Concordia, Argentina and Concepción sites began a campaign in 2024 to reuse surplus ceramic rings for the manufacture of formaldehyde in formalin plants. With this sustainable vision and support from the University of Concepción, the goal is to not only continue this campaign in 2025 but also extend it to catalysts.
Our 2030 Goals

Bakelite aims to achieve a 10% reduction in disposal intensity by 2030. By integrating sustainability goals into every aspect of our operations and continuously seeking innovative solutions, we are poised to create a more sustainable future.

At Bakelite Synthetics, sustainability is not just a goal; it’s a core value that drives our actions and decisions every day. We are proud of our progress and remain dedicated to making a positive impact on the environment. Read more about sustainability goals in our Sustainability Report.
