Reducing Wastewater Through Smarter Processes
Managing wastewater has been a key area of focus, with efforts centred on improving how water is handled, treated, and reduced across the site.
By making targeted adjustments to infrastructure and processes, the team has been able to:
- Reduce the volume of wastewater requiring off-site treatment
- Improve how water is routed and reused where appropriate
- Minimise unnecessary waste through better system control
These changes have led to a significant reduction in waste-related handling over time—demonstrating how focused improvements can deliver meaningful environmental benefits.
Reducing Energy Use with Smarter Equipment
In 2024, Cowie introduced a new air compressor designed to automatically adjust output based on real-time demand.
This smarter approach ensures energy is only used when needed—helping to avoid unnecessary consumption. As a result, the site is saving approximately 142,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, roughly equivalent to powering dozens of homes.
Modernising Water Treatment
Cowie has also invested in a new reverse osmosis system to enhance on-site water treatment.
This modern technology improves efficiency while reducing reliance on more hazardous chemicals used in older processes. As a result, the site is improving both its environmental performance and overall safety profile.
