Bakelite® Formaldehyde and Derivatives

Bakelite® Formaldehyde and Derivatives

Bakelite Synthetics operates a large formaldehyde manufacturing network with strategically-placed assets across Europe and the United States. Our capacity and diversity of locations allow us to effectively support the merchant market and our customers with a long-term security of supply. All of our plants have the highest commitment to product quality, environmental health, safety and sustainability with all European and many U.S. sites being ISO 9001-certified. Experience the exceptional quality of Formaldehyde, for purchase across Europe, North America, and South America.

Solutions of formaldehyde, or formalin, are used in the manufacture of synthetic resins due to their high reactivity with phenol, urea, melamine and other similar compounds. Bakelite Synthetics produces formaldehyde (HCHO) solutions in a broad range of concentrations up to 52%, and in both uninhibited and methanol-inhibited grades. Although these are the most popular formulations, we have the capability and expertise to customize unique formulations to meet your specific needs.

Bakelite® formaldehyde is a chemical intermediate, which is used as a building block in a variety of applications, including molded articles; high-pressure laminates; adhesives for plywood and particleboard as well as other wood panelboard products; coatings; varnishes and enamels; foundry core and shell binders; leather treatment; chelates, glass and mineral wool insulation; and fertilizers.

Some of the chemical intermediate uses of our formaldehyde include:

Resins

  • Urea-Formaldehyde Resins
  • Melamine Resins
  • Phenolic Resins
  • Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-Butanediol (BDO)
  • Key raw materials for polyurethane for fibers, foams and elastomers

Polyols

  • Trimethylolpropane (TMP)
  • Neopentyl Glycol (NPG)
  • Pentaerythritol

Bakelite also produces several formaldehyde derivatives such as Hexamine, Triazines,* and Urea-Formaldehyde Concentrate (UFC) Derivatives.

Urea-Formaldehyde Concentrate

Insol-U-25 and Sta-Form 60™ urea-formaldehyde concentrate (UFC or UFC85) is used as a precursor for fertilizers, wood adhesives and other industrial applications.

Hexamethylenetetramine

More commonly known as Hexamine is made from ammonia and formaldehyde. It is an efficient crosslinker with no water release and is a formaldehyde donor when used in an aqueous acidic environment. Available in aqueous solutions, it is used in a variety of industrial applications, including:

  • Curing agent for industrial phenolic resins
  • Chemical intermediate/chemical synthesis
  • Rubber cross-linker

Triazines*

Bakelite® Hydrogen Sulfide Scavengers for Oil and Gas Production

Hydrogen sulfide naturally occurs in crude oil. There are many safety hazards associated with H2S, so it is important to effectively control it. H2S also has detrimental effects on production equipment as it is highly corrosive and can degrade process and storage infrastructure, leading to costly repairs.

Bakelite offers monoethanoloamine (MEA) triazine products that are specifically designed to control and scavenge hydrogen sulfide for:

  • Crude oil
  • Natural gas
  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)
  • Steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD)
  • Water treatment

Bakelite technical specialists can help customers choose the optimal product for their manufacturing  process requirements and performance needs.

* Triazines are only available in Europe.
