Below we highlight Benefits and Compliance Analyst Angel Harris. Learn more about Angel’s role and her career insights below.

Q: What is your role at Bakelite? How has it changed over the years?

A: I am part of the Benefits and Compliance team at Bakelite. My primary focus is ensuring employees have access to accurate and efficient benefits while maintaining compliance with all relevant policies and regulations. I started in this role a year ago and have had additional tasks added over time, expanding the scope of my work. These added responsibilities have allowed me to grow within my position and contribute in new ways.

Q: How does your work contribute to Bakelite’s mission and vision? How would you say you are you putting your fingerprints on the organization?

A: My work directly contributes to the company’s mission and vision by ensuring that employees have access to comprehensive, well-managed benefits that support their health, well-being, and financial security. By managing benefits plans and maintaining compliance, I help foster a positive employee experience, which is essential for attracting, retaining, and empowering top talent to drive the company forward.

I’m putting my fingerprints on the organization by advocating for continuous improvement in our benefits offerings and processes. Whether it’s introducing new wellness initiatives, providing feedback to enhance the new hire experience, or ensuring policies are clear and accessible, I strive to leave a meaningful impact that aligns with Bakelite’s commitment to its people. My goal is to create systems and experiences that employees feel are designed with their best interests in mind.

Q: When did you join Bakelite?

A: I joined the company in December 2023. Before joining, I worked for the New York Stock Exchange, where I managed their benefits systems and plans. My previous role was very similar to what I do now. I’ve been in the benefits field for over 10 years, building extensive experience in managing benefits programs and ensuring compliance. Benefits have always been my focus and passion throughout my career.

Q: What’s the best part about your job at Bakelite? What makes this company different from others?

A: The best part of my job is being able to help associates navigate their benefits and ensure they have access to the resources they need to support themselves and their families. I enjoy working on programs that truly make a difference in people’s lives, whether it’s through wellness initiatives, financial planning tools, or ensuring smooth transitions during open enrollment. What sets this company apart is the collaborative culture. There’s a genuine effort to listen to feedback and continuously improve processes to better serve employees.

Q: What’s your advice to someone who is interested in working at Bakelite?

A: My advice to someone interested in working here is to come in with a collaborative mindset and a willingness to learn. This company values people who take initiative, adapt to change, and bring innovative ideas to the table. It’s also important to prioritize communication and building strong relationships, as teamwork plays a big role in success here. Lastly, take advantage of the resources and opportunities that Bakelite provides, whether it’s professional development, wellness programs, or networking with colleagues. It’s a great place to grow if you’re proactive and open to embracing challenges!

Q: Is there a group/person at Bakelite that has had a particularly big impact on your career?

A: The HR team’s guidance and support has been instrumental in helping me navigate the complexities of our organization. Additionally, collaborating with other departments, such as Communications and Payroll, has been invaluable. Their partnership has helped me understand the bigger picture of how my role contributes to the company’s overall success. The collaborative culture here at Bakelite has made a big difference in my career development.

Q: How do you mentor colleagues who are newer to Bakelite?

A: I was recently a new hire myself, so I draw from my own experience to mentor colleagues who are newer to Bakelite. Since much of the information and policies are new and can feel overwhelming, I make a point to jot down a list of resources, tips, and insights that I found helpful during my transition. I also actively provide feedback to my direct manager, suggesting ways we can improve the onboarding process or offer additional support to new hires. By sharing these insights and being approachable, I aim to create a smoother transition for others and help them feel confident in their roles.
